The creation of new instruments, new sounds reflects the creation of my own voice in this world.
Luthiery has been a passion of mine for a long time now. When I first put together my first hammered dulcimer, I was powerfully drawn into a world where my inner labyrinth made sense to me. All the complexities and seeming incongruities of the outside world could dissolve away as I would spend days lost in the creative process.
Backed by training in design and architecture, I’ve had a fascination with the cross-section between beauty and structure. Since the stringed instruments that I made brought tremendous compression and tension on different materials and joints, I got to experiment with the way that vibrations move through matter. The manipulation of the matter is really what gives an instrument its particular voice. And by walking the tight-rope between strength/rigidity & freedom of movement, one can influence the overall sound with careful adjustments.
Through a lot of trial and error, and many lutes that simply failed. This learning helped me to better understand how to construct these new sounds that integrate many ancient luthiery techniques into many contemporary practices.
